I'm starting to get a 1987 70hsp Johnson going - I checked the compression & the top showed 130 - middle 145 & lower 135 - Is it worth fixing up?
It came on the 16' Starcraft pictured I want to fix up I bought for $1000- was told it had about 30hrs on a rebuild but you know how that goes
After some adjustments & a good de-carb it seems pretty good but i'm pretty new to this stuff-
Preciate any input

Re: Compression Question

Doesn't sound too bad to me. You are right on the 10% within each other, but a good decarb may well fix that.

Re: Compression Question

Wow great deal for the boat.

I had the same problem, did a decarb and kept startron in the fuel, it got better as I used it last year.

Re: Compression Question

You should be thrown in jail!! You stole that thing. Not sure how much those are worth over there, but here they are worth a fair bit more. As far as the compression, personally I would not open up a motor based on those compression numbers. Just do a de-carb and keep you eye on it. Hopefully the numbers will get better.

Have a great day

Rob.
