I just bought a 2000 Ranger R73 W/115 Johnson. The thing ran great the first 3 times out. We went out this morning and it just completley lost all power at the top end won't even get on plane. It seems to idle fine but will not take off even with the hammer all the way down. The motor missed a few times before this. I changed the plugs and tried it again but no luck. It is starting to even sound rough kind of like it's missing a cylinder. Any ideas?

When is the last time the carbs been cleaned on her? Maybe time for a good carb cleaning with brand new carb kits and it is very, extremely easy to do. Take care, Bob

Also how old is the gas? Did you put fresh oil/gas in her?

Well it looks like it started out as a carb issue and turned into a blown power head so I guess the question now is any suggestions on wear to get a power head for this thing.

Before you spend a bunch of money on an exchange powerhead you really should do some basic troubleshooting.

You wouldn't be a very happy boater if your new powerhead has the same problems.

Start by testing spark on each cylinder to be sure that the ignition is capable of firing ALL cylinders.

While you have the spark plugs out, what do they look like?

Check the compression on each cylinder, are they all close to the same? If the compression varies greatly THEN another powerhead may be the deal.

I checked compression on it yesterday and found three of the four cylinders to be looking great but it takes all four to perform right. Then I pulled the head cover off and found some bad scoring in the cylinder but no metal imbedded in the head cover itself. What does this mean? Broke rod?

Sam, you don't know till you go further, remove the exhaust housing, etc. to see what happen. setting it is only one, if you know the difference between a open and boxed end wrench, you should be able to rebuild it cheaper than a rebuilt head.
