Re: got my tow vehicle

Those guys buy auction vehicles, I know you probably have to get it inspected anyway but have your mech go over it good. Having worked at an auto auction I can tell you quality is a crap shoot. Burbans tend to live forever though with proper maint. Good luck with your vehicle.
And dealers sell trade in's. Same crap shoot !!!! only most likely for less outlay. If you believe that they do the multi point inspection on all trade in's that they sell then I have some land for sale that might interest you. It's all about the mighty $ same as all the folk that offer all these "free" services and multi % off. All sales pitch to get your money.
Just my thoughts and experiences though.

Re: got my tow vehicle

You got yourself a great truck!
We had a 98 Sub, and no rust issues (central Indiana, with lots of road salt usage). Got totalled, or it'd still be running. We LOVED that truck. I now have a 2001 but miss the great seats the '98 had.
As far as rust goes, GM appears to have figured out how to keep them from rusting out for your Sub's body style, so you should be OK for a long time.
Also had a '86 6.2L Diesel before Sub (it DID have rust issues). There are a couple of items to keep in mind:
- Get and use Stanadyne's fuel additive pump lubricant, or their combo "Parformance Formula" that's also a Cetane improver. It will help your injectionpump last much longer and work better.
- Plug your block heater anytime temp drops below 10 degrees F (mine would start down to a little below zero, but with LOTS of smoke until it warmed up)

Your engine is the same one that GM put in medium duty trucks (delivery trucks, not 3/4 Ton pick-ups) and they'd go for hundreds of thousands of miles - like someone else said, yours is barely broken in.
Enjoy the great truck!

Re: got my tow vehicle

when you look in the glove box there is a sticker with rpo codes that should be 2-3 number/letters long

Exactly. And while a dealer can get you a "build sheet" they might not be in hurry, if you aren't buying it from them. Besides, GM makes it easy, no crawling under the truck. Just flip open the glovebox door, and remove all the crap, and you'll find the sticker.
The codes you'll need are the "G"s, those are axle codes. G80 is a limited slip differential. GU6 is 3.42, GT4 is 3.73, and GT5 is 4.10. Then the "M"s is where the tranny code is. "Z" is where the suspension codes are. Hence all those "Z71" trucks, that's the code for off road suspension. Z85 is the trailering package.
But if you are really planning to do a lot of towing, and you know nothing about the truck, see if your local dealer will get the sheet. Cause the owner's manual doesn't tell you.

Re: got my tow vehicle

And now onto your new-to-you diesel.

I had a 1994 GMC 2500 with the 6.5L so have somewhat of a clue as to what I'm talking about. I now have a 2001 with the Duramax/Allison.

First, I would be very surprised if it doesn't have all the trailering stuff already. I don't think the diesels came without it.

You have a 4L80E tranny, which is a very good tranny. Keep it cool and it will be just fine. A tranny temp gauge goes a long way to letting you know if it is not cool. You can upgrade the tranny cooler, but I wouldn't unless you have an issue.

Look under the hood. 1997 was a transition year on the engine cooling. If you see two thermostats, you have the upgraded cooling which includes a higher volume water pump and two thermostats. If you have the single thermostat, you have the older cooling and I was able to overheat mine.

The real problems with the motor are the "Pump Mounted Driver (PMD)" also called something else I don't remember. Ebay is a good source for the fix. Search for PMD and you will see a bunch. Either carry a spare or relocate it somewhere cooler than the middle of the engine. The other problem is the Oil Pressure Sender (OPS). It shuts off the in-line fuel pump when the motor is off based on oil pressure. They go bad and your main pump ends up doing all the work. When towing, it can't pull enough fuel through and you have power problems.

Check the tow rating for your truck as it may be in the 7,000 pound range. I honestly think the 6.5L was able to pull more than the rating but GM downgraded it on the diesels. They kept the same 7,000 pound rating even in one ton pickups, despite heavier suspension, brakes etc. I towed about 6,500 pound with my pickup and found it towed fine. (The Duramax tows much better).

And think about an exhaust gas temp gauge (pyrometer) as you can cook your turbo. Once I put mine on I found I was exceeding 1300F with how I drove and had to change my habits a little.

The Diesel page was a good source for info on the 6.5L.

Let's see. What else. Use a decent diesel lubricant (alcohol free) especially with the low sulphur fuels out there now. Change the filters when you get it.

Okay, I had never seen that before. A 1500 with that diesel and 8 bolt wheels. But NADA decodes the VIN they listed as a 1500 with a diesel. it also said it has alloy wheels too. Which it does, but those are wheels from a New Silverado or much newer Suburban 3/4 ton. In 1997 3/4 Suburbans all got the same steel wheel.
Maybe a trip to your local GMC dealer is in order to find out about your "unique" vehicle?!

Re: got my tow vehicle

have it scheduled for Tuesday, they will do a "27' point check up , program the remote key for me, and change the oil , for about for 40 bucks and probably offer to sell me few other services. the seller did a oil change,as expected, but who know what grade oil, reg or diesel so a change will work, and getting the exhaust ,brakes examined are all in order.

Never said that. Just suggested he be cautious.

My tow vehicle was bought at auction, it was a trade in, and it worked out great. I hope waj's does too.

I have a friend who had a 91 Suburban half ton with the diesel. it had half ton axles though. the weak point in the truck was always the rear end. diesel torque + 1/2 ton rear end + a heavy trailer + a heavy foot = destroyed differential....

Re: got my tow vehicle

I use a 98 sub to tow my 5500-6000lbs proline. it is a 1/2ton with 36in tires, but i have upgraded the gears to 4.88, which is a touch below the stock 3.73 with those tires. i put a tranny cooler on before i even started towing, it is cheap insurance. heat is the number one prob with auto trannys. you can get a big one from b&m for 60-70 bucks and take maybe an hour to put on.

Re: got my tow vehicle

The little one on the driver side is an engine oil cooler, you should check all the engine oil connections for ~sturdyness~ and leaks. On the engine where the line set connects to the engine there is a odd/dumb quick connect type fitting thats held together with a spring clip, the fittings have been known to wear out and come apart and well pumping all that oil out real quick almost never turns out good.

Trans cooler on the passenger side and most of those trucks have a tiny little power steering/brake cooler on the driver side as well.

Re: got my tow vehicle

you were on the money, the diff is a 3.43, the dealer reports that the oil cooler hose has a leak, and recommends changing the pads and rotors. needs a air filter. 8.5 qts of oil
it passed NJ MTV inspection today, but they notice looseness in the wheels.
