I just bought the Bass Tracker Pro 16 with a 2009 25HP Mercury EFI Outboard on the back. I know from my manual that it takes half throttle in first hour, 3 quarters in the second hour, and then full throttle for next 8 hours just no more that 5 minutes each time....what im asking is if any of yall can tell me if i have to change my oil after a certain amout of hours because of the "break-in"?? my friend at work brought this up to me yesterday and i was confused please help!

EFI is a 2 stroke motor, no oil to change, except lower unit oil.

EFI = electronic fuel injection

You can't hurt by giving it an oil change it's only like a quart or two of oil.

I did that to mine just to get out any tiny bits of metal (after all they are manufactured in China). It's not in the manual to do so, but I just figured for a few bucks it just might extend the life. I did the filter too!

I kept track in the blank pages in the back of the manual of the break in in date, time and throttle changes. If you ever resell it, people like to see that it had a proper break in.

After that, I just change the oil, filter, gas filter and plugs at the end of each season, so I'm ready for each season's opener.

I just put in on a river and keep going in one direction for 1/2 the time, turn around and work my way back. This way I break new motors in in one day. More fun than going around in circle on a lake.

The engine is made in Japan, not China and you should change the oil after 20 hours or as it becomes contaminated with fuel. The oil will probably never become dirty like car oil, but fuel contamination of crankcase oil is very common on a new engine and engines run at low speeds.

Ya, I forgot the smaller ones are Japan. I have a 9.9 and a 40. The 40's and up are made in China:

For warranty puposes the Merc book says change oil and filter every 100 hours or once a year whichever comes first. Or more often if operated under adverse conditions like slow trolling.

Now let's see if TG has a sense of humor, shall we? . . . . The book also says in a small footnote: if your Mercury is one of the smaller mercs that were manufactured by Tohatsu for certain model years then of course you'll need to change the oil every 20 hours :D :) :eek: :D
