53 evenrude lightwin ???????

Hi All
Im new to the forum and have a question, I just got a evinrude lightwin serial#3012 37206 looks good but I would like info on anything you have, I understand joe reeves wrote in about tune-ups, but I couldnt find it.
Motor is complete, and clean but paint and decals are faded or worn away, any and all info would be helpfull.
-point gap
-fuel ratio
-high-low
-rich-lean

Point gap .020.Champion J4C plug set at .030,Original fuel mix 16:1(you could ask at www.omci.org
if you can use 24:1.low speed initial setting 11/4 turn out,high speed 3/4 turn out.Final adjustment high speed first warm operating unrestrained.
counter clockwise is rich.

Fuel mix with TC-W3 oil is 24:1 per OMC.

I have a couple of 1950's 3 HP Lightwins. Great motors, but...
Check for spark with a spark tester first. If not healthy, then the coils are probably shot, but easily available.
Loosen and disconnect the metal fuel line to the carb, and open the fuel tank vent and shut off valve (run the open end into a can...). You should get a good flow of gas out of the fuel line. If not, there is a metal filter screwed up into the fuel tank, where the shut off valve is. It can get clogged up if the motor has set for awhile.
I'd change the water pump impeller if you don't know how old it is, but anyway if it's pumping OK you should see a mist coming out about halfway down the front of the leg out of a little square fitting.
If there is a cork float in the carb, it need to be inspected very carefully to make sure it is intact.
Nice motors that are easy to work on. They will run like a watch when tuned properly.

Everyone has been helpful, thanks much.
I ordered and installed carb kit, impeller. Engine runs high and low rpms
then dies also alot of smoke. fuel is 24:1. Engine doesnt run at all after I took out thehigh speed novel????
It is getting gas. high speed needle is out turn3/4 the low speed is out 1 1/2 turns. is the float adjustible and how should it be? level with housing or tipped up or down ?I sure would appreciate all the info you can give.

Are you running in a barrel? If it's sucking up smoke, it won't run right.
Look at the "TOP SECRET" post at the top of this forum under "How to Adjust carbs".
The float should be level when the carb is turned upside down.

Enjine wont even start, float is level, good spark, plugs are wet ??? but when I pet the lever to start and pull it the lever will end up in stop position after 3 or 4 pulls??
+ 1/2 in. od thick O ring came with rebuild kit but doesnt look like it goes anywere according to the exploded view.

Motor starts idels for 30 seconds then dies. it dont matter were I put the throttle it still ideles then dies.Strange but getting closer, I keep thinking float, I may go back to old needle and seat the needles look the same but the seats are diff. depths

I feel very dumb, one of the coils was rubbing on the flywheel. will this be o.k.? I still have good spark but flywheel and coil have scrapes. expensive lesson. thanks for everything.
