Hi,

Was wondering has anyone had this problem ?
Motor starts up fine but if the acceleration is reduced to a slow idle speed cuts out...

impossible to put into gear as it cuts when put to a slow idle speed

if done very quickly I mange to change gear and as long as the speed is medium to fast all is ok.... drop the acceleration and cuts imediately

Slow speed mixture adjustment if there is one (you dont give the year so have not tried to check). See the item on the "Engine FAQs board" re carb needle adjustment if appropriate http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

More than probably though caused by a dirty carb. Strip and clean all jets and passages thoroughly.

Use of choke may keep it going at idle if the carb is dirty. May aid diagnosis

I certainly agree with Vic above. I had the same symptom with my 9.5 and found a little choke made a difference so I set the slow speed needle a little richer and it worked perfect. I had put a new kit in my carb. just prior. You need to be very careful shifting gears when your RPM's are up there. It can cause a major smash up in the gear case and that can be very expensive. Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks for that..:)

don,t think mixture is issue... not sure of year secondhand motor..the ratio is 3:1... tried with fresh petrol very careful with the mixture

will do as suggested..

What mixture is 3:1? The fuel:eek:il ratio for that outboard is 50:1.

We're not talking about oil and fuel here, or any other ratio. We're talking about the low speed setting on the carburetor. There's a knob on the front of your engine that lets you control that. Turn it counterclockwise for a richer air:fuel mixture, clockwise for a leaner mixture.

Richening up might make your outboard idle better, but there are lots of other reasons. In some cases, the idle stop on the carburetor is not adjusted correctly, so the idle speed is too slow. That will stall your engine when you put it in gear. A dirty carburetor, though, is probably the most common cause on used outboards people have just acquired. A carb cleaning, with a full disassembly and a carb kit, generally takes care of that.

Still, start by working on the mixture setting. Then, check to make sure that the idle stop adjustment under the cowling is OK. If it still won't idle, then it's time for a carb cleaing. Get a workshop manual for your outboard, since removing the carb on that one isn't all that intuitive.

we can help with the year if you post the model number. It should be on the transom mount. I hope your not mixing your gas 3/1. I doubt you could make a motor start on that mix. What are you talking about? Rick.
