I'm changing out my transom assembly - Mercruiser Alpha One, Gen I.
Does the gasket between the gimbel housing and transom go on dry or do you use some sort of gasket sealer? If you do use a gasket sealer, what do you typically use?
I glued the gasket to the transom assembly and then after it dried and stayed in place, I put a light coat of silicone on the surface of the foam gasket. (Not the RTV type - but the vaseline type of silicone - it is used to lubricate o-rings). Worked great for me with no leaks.
Mercury recommends no sealer on gasket. They say if anything a little bellows adhesive to hold it in place.The gasket should be put on over the housing studs and then put the housing w/gasket on it on to the transom.Tighten from center studs out a little at a time to about 35lbs. of torque.
