Ok,I have a 1995 Bass Tracker Pro Deep V-17 with a 40 hp Mercury 4 cylinder outboard on it.The motor runs perfectly, goes 28 mph at about 4800 rpms. That is with 2 people and gear.Ice chest you know all the crap that 2 guys can take on a fishing trip.If I ad 1 more guy and his crap,we go down to 18 mph.I have everybody and thier mother wanting to buy my 40.I found a 1990 something Mercury 80 hp.I have'nt seen it yet,or heard it run,but the guys says that everything is perfect, and that the motor was rebuilt and never put back on a boat.He is sending me the model # so that I can make sure of the year.He wants $1,000 for it.What do you think of this deal, with power and everything,if everything is good with the motor. How many things will I have to change to make all my gauges and everything work.

Re: 1990 ish Mercury 80 hp

I'm not sure that Merc built 80hp's in the '90's. I'm pretty sure that, from 1990 to 2000, it goes from 75hp to 90hp, so the onr you're looking for is probably older.

Also, i'd be cautious about an engine that have'nt been run since it was rebuilt.

So, a least obtain the serial # and, for sure, ask for a lake test of an hour or so.

BTW, did you get my PM?

Edit: sorry, i didn't notice that the engine wasn't on a boat. So, at least a barrel test and a few more question:
- Why was the engine rebuilt?
- What was the cause of the failure? Did it was corrected?
- Who did the rebuilt? What parts were replaced?

Hope this help.
