installing a generator

from time to time my stereo runs my batteries down to where I have to run my engine for a while to recharge them. I'm thinking about building a box in my engine compartment that I could put a honda EU200i generator in and run it to keep my batteries charged rather than run the boat with people swiming in the water. I realize that I would have to hook up a blower system to keep a good flow of fresh air circulating through the box and that I would have to ground the generator to the engine. I would only use the generator 3-4 times a year and the boat is a 27' powerquest.
Has anyone done anything like this and how did it work out?

The major concern here will be carbon monoxide poisoning. CO is heavier than air and will conviently concentrate along the water line where ever you exhaust the generator. There are many fatalities every year from people hanging around their swim platforms near their generator exhaust and becoming overcome from CO and simply drowning.

A second battery on an isolator would be a better option in my opinion if all your looking to run is your stereo for extended periods of time.

Bad idea to put it in your engine compartment for storage and running. The EU2000 is NOT ignition protected. Gas fumes and sparks don't mix. We don't want to read about you in the newspaper.

are you saying that the carbon monoxide coming off a little generator is worse than when I have to run the 454?

No. however swimming, or even lounging on the boat while an engine is ideling is potentially dangerous. It's just something you need to be aware of.

Just weighing the options here. I think isolating a battery would be a better option.

Ayuh,... Exactly....

If you do it,...
The Coasties will have a Field day with you when they inspect your boat.....

Original post states "batteries"(plural), are they not connected to a 1-both-2 switch?

How about a solar pannel to charge the batteries? There are small ones available that would fit the boat.

You should have two batteries one house battery to run the radio and one more for JUST starting the engine. The idea is you charge them together and discharge them seperatly. Something in the 100Ah range should be good.

I am a firm believer in solar panels, as mark42 said. I built pedistals on dock to house solar panels to charge wave runners, AND plug them into boat when adrift or at anchor to maintain charge, "mostly trolling batteries" a little light goes a long way.
