Hi all. I am having trouble getting my motor to crank fast enough to start. It feels like to much back pressure. I can take the plugs out and the flywheel will spin like a top, but when they are in it's like there is to much compression. I just replaced the starter as advised by a marine mechanic, but to no avail. Just don't know where to go from here. Thanks, Fred

You need a fully charge powerful battery to get the 300 RPM you need so you might want to have your battery tested.

Very often, the battery cables or the battery connections are the problem. The cables often corrode inside the sheathing, and can no longer carry the load.

For a cold start on your motor, you also need to have the choke plates absolutely 100% closed and synchronized until the engine fires up. The only way to be absolutely sure that they are staying closed is to have someone crank the engine while you watch the carburetor throats. If you find they are not closing fully, move the choke solenoid in small increments until they do.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Not likely these are the problem, but: Be sure the link arm to the timer base is connected. If it ever becomes disconnected, and the timing advances, it will be hard to start. Do both starters have good brushes inside?

Welcome to iboats Fred, I have never heard of an outboard with too much compression, that is not your problem.

You have replaced the starter so rule that out, next step is to put a known good, fully charged battery on it, if that doesn't do it, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY and start cleaning connections, one at a time, replace wires when done, impossible to screw anything up if you do one wire at a time.

Post results and we will go from there.
