engine swap

hello all, i have a 1988 4 winns freedom 160 with a 3.0l and bravo out drive. i have access to both a gm 5.0 and 5.7 engine. does anyone know whats entailed in swapping the engines (matching the outdrives, changing the heads, and so on) or could someone point me in the direction of some good literature on the subject? thanks in advance, loren

the out drive is a cobra, not a bravo. sorry, only one cup of coffee this morning...

if you are talking about using an automotive engine don't do it.

If you are talking about a marine engine. you need a whole new drive as it will require a different gear ratio.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard Loren,.....

1st thing is to Properly ID what you've got Now....

There were No Bravos in 1988,+ the 3.0l has Never been offered with the Bravo...
Got some motor or outdrive #s,..??

If you search this forum using Motor Swap, or Engine Swap,....
You'll have a few Days worth of reading about this subject...

The Short answers is,...
Sell the boat,+ Buy 1 with the driveline you Want,...
'cause you'll otherwise have to pretty much replace ALL of the driveline you have Now....

Well you got a few strikes against you to start. One is the early Cobra is going to be tough for parts and two, your gear ratio is going to be too low (numerically high). Anything is possible, but I think you'll find this group will recommend that you sell this boat and start with a better project candidate.

thanks for the quick responces. yes they are auto engines, as there is nothing really wrong with the 3.0 (other than the carb) i will just keep it as is. this is a great forum, glad to be aboard...
