When you paint the aluminum, you have to take it all the way to bare metal and prime it with a good aluminum primer. Then you need a good quality non metal paint for the protective surface.

In your photo, water has found its way between the paint and the metal and set up a little system to eat up your aluminum.

the midsection cover plate was cracked which apparently is no longer made. I did find one without going to the junkyard took the old plate off and found this? What is the purpose of this part, the motor runs fine without it.

Click the first thumbnail below to see what that looks like on my parts motor without the salt. It is basicall a metal connection coated heavily in rubber to act as a damper. Without it the stern bracket won't hold the motor.

The second picture will give you a better idea of what the part looks like. I've pushed the rubber back with the pencil to expose the metal carrier.

So basically the way mine looks is normal with the addition of salt. Should I just lightly brush clean the metal then put the new cover plate back on?

Yes. Just make sure that the post where my pencil is pointing is supported by the cover.

If that is sea salt, a product called salt-away will remove it. Calcium from limestone (calcium carbonate) can look the same.

So does that mean a mixture of salt-away and CLR will clear things up for sure?

Salt away removes salt from motors, boats and trailers used in salt water.

Never used CLR - what is it made of?
