Exercise while boating?

The boating experience is a fantastic recreation, and provides great enjoyment.
The experience of riding in a boat, however, does not provide much opportunity
for any exercise, like sporting activities do. Skiers and tubers get some exercise
while being pulled, but aside from that, I am wondering if there are any
exercise routines that can be done while being in a boat.

So, are there any exercise routines that anyone can recommend while being
in a boat for most of the day?

Re: Exercise while boating?

I'm fairly active to begin with.
I usually manage to get some unwanted exercise on the water, swimming, walking on the beaches, keeping my balance at WOT, keeping up with the kids.
The sore muscles the next day let me know.

To answer your question - get a rowboat.

"There are so many heartbeats in a lifetime, I'm not going to waste any on exercise".
Wish I could remember who said this.

This has to be a prank question. But, I have seen stranger.
If it's necessary for you to exersize while boating. Stop the boat, (pull to the side of the shipping channel and drop anchor if necessary), then drop down on the deck and give me 50 pushups-stand up and run in place for 10 minutes plus 150 jumping jacks. Then pull anchor get back in the channel and go till you feel the urge to exersize again. Repeat as necessary.

Driving a center console boat while standing offers pretty strenuous exercise if there are any wakes to cross or a fair chop.

Ain't no prank question - I have been trying to keep my aging body in shape for
the last 20 years or so, with all kinds of aerobic activities.

Since getting more serious about boating, and spending more time in the boat,
that greatly reduces the amount of time I could devote to aerobic activity.

All the same, I tried your recommendations, but only made it to 20 pushups.
At my age, I don't feel too bad about that. I'll keep at it until I make it
all the way!

Thanks!

Pitch a 15# navy anchor and 10' of chain overboard in 100' of water, then let out another 4-500' for proper scope... When the wind picks up to 20+MPH and you're eating 2-3' waves, pull the boat back to the anchor and then lift the 20# of anchor and chain 100' straight up

I only made my buddy do this one time until I showed him that I could maneuver the boat ahead of the anchor :D

You need a cuddy cabin for that.
Now you tell me.
Hope I didn't break any rules of the road.

Come crabbing with me and pull a dozen traps. Then the fun starts getting the crabs out of the traps.:p

30 traps here.
I'll put them in a bushel basket and keep them in the water during the course of the day. The basket gets heavy after soaking and filling up.
The real fun starts back at the pier when all the gear has to be carried up hill.

It should be clear from the above that strenuous exercise can be had doing something useful and without those dumb aerobic dances and other various tortures that use up one's body and produce nothing. :)

The wife and I 'exercise' at least two nights a week (weather permitting) on the boat. :D

Cast and reel for a good half a day if not longer, either on a regular rod and reel or a (freshwater) big game fishing rod and reel I've done both.

I hardly can stand to worm fish, I recently started worm fishing again here and there, but I like to cover more area with a crank bait or topwater lure.

Throwing a casting net isn't always easy to cast and or retrieve, that also might make for a good exercise.

Get ya an anchormate and drop anchor in the deepest part on the lake and retrieve, and repeat a few times. Or you could do it without and anchormate for that matter.

We trailer our boat so that part is not bad. But when it's time to get gas I have to haul full jerry cans up the ramp from the floats at the marina and we get as much as 25 feet of tide range. Low tide is no fun. :(
