Re: "Check engine light"

Small extract from this link.

Acetone can reduce hydrocarbon emissions up to 60 percent. In some older cars, the HC readings with acetone in a 1986 GMC went from 440 PPM to 195, as just one example. Though mileage gains taper off with too much acetone, hydrocarbon emissions are nevertheless greatly reduced. Pure acetone is an extremely clean burning fuel that burns in air with a pretty blue, smokeless flame.

Kenmyfam,

Let's see if we can clear this up by me asking just 2 questions?
When they smog your vehicle, do you see how their doing it?
If yes is the answer....
Then do they either,
A) Open your driver side door and take a small cable and connect it to the connection point in the car, under the dash by the steering column.

OR

B) Open the hood and hookup a wire to the #1 cylinder spark plug wire
AND put a sniffer tube in your exhaust pipe. Then they rev the engine for a
minute to get the high rpm emission readings.

Well there you have it in a nut shell.
That's why your passing with the acetone trick.
They're not linking up with the vehicles ECM as in option A.
If they did and you had just cleared the ECM, they're smog computer would come back with a insufficient/could not read all data and not pass. Because after you clear the vehicles ECM, it takes about a 25 mile drive to get all readings from the sensor's stored into the ECM for it to be read.

They're doing smogs like it's a pre 1988 or is it 86 vehicle. Where any vehicle before that year has no ECM.
That's where the OBD 1 & 2 comes into play. Now I hear they're onto OBD 3 in the 2009 year. It's like a Intel Pentium 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 went with computers.

Just cross your fingers and hope they keep doing it that way.

Hope this clears things up.
