i finally decided to try and clean my old quad four barrel carb that was running rich, this is what i found, on the needle seat there was no hook from the needle connect to the float rear, i have seen in many carb , never seen one with the needle not hanging from the rear of the float. the little coil hook was not on it, i install a new needle with the litle clip attatch to it which i hand on the rear of the float, could that be my problem where i was running rich????? thanks

The little spring clip is not necessary. It just asissts in installation. The fuel pressure will raise it off the seat when the float goes down. An improper adjustment can make the carb run rich. As well as a poor seal or dirt in the needle and seat. But that usually will make fuel pour out the vent.

What makes you think the motor is running rich? Post some symptoms and we can help you.

You don't think the hook would affect the float level?
I'm thinking that the needle would be in the seat not hanging on the clip any more and could cause a lower float level - albeit opposite of his problem.
Either way, we do need more info to give a more competent answer.

If the throttle plates are not totally closed at idle you can get some drip from the main boosters. You will be able to see this when you look down the throat of the carb when it is idling. (Do not give it any throttle while you look down the throat or you could lose your eybrows :) )

If it is dripping, the idle mixture screws will have no effect.

Has it always run rich or did it just start?

You are on the right track by cleaning and blowing it out.

The clip just locates the needle it dosen't need to be there. The float rides on the needle so no it will not be out of adjustment just cause the needle has no clip

Re: need help on quadrajet needle seat

The two loose screws on the bottom are the air mixture screws. If you are able to screw them in all the carb has some internal issues that a good cleaning and rebuild should take care of.
After rebuilding, before starting, screw them in and then back off two or three complete turns. After it starts and warms up, screw one side in until it starts to run rough, back out slowly until it smooths out and then back out another 1/4 turn. Do the same with the other side. Run it a while and repeat.
The popping disturbs me...I'd take a peek at the timing.

The threads do not seal the filter housing. There is a gasket that goes on the end of the housing. If you want to throw it out send it to me :)

I can't help you on your other problem I do not understand what the problem is. Post a picture if you can

no dont bend that tab. look down the throat and make sure your butterflys are almost straight up and down, when the throttle shaft is turned to wot and the tab your talking about is bottomed out on the throttle body. are you getting wot rpm? if you are and you have idle then your ok.
i would get your old carb next to the new one and see if you can see any difference. if you dont understad your Q-jet DONT start bending anything.

i would hang on to that old carb. it has all your tune up parts in it that can be hard to come by sometimes- jets and metering rods power valve spring. the throttle plate is is allso so good to have as the throttle shaft wears out on them and causes vacume leaks.

Re: need help on quadrajet needle seat

wow, i already toss it in the garbage, about the gasket inlet using a gasket, yes i know this . this one takes the gasket at the very tip compare to some that take that o ring gasket at the outer edge. what happen the big nut has no more threads every thing eats off, also the threaded part to the carb body. and no this one doesnt seem to get me where the broken one did. i didnt thought of looking down the throat with the throttle at wot and engine off, graet idea thanks.

ok i will see .i have another on that keeps flooding my friend mess with the float , if anyone wants it can have it just pay for shipping.
