I just changed the impeller on a 1961 merc 60 twin. It has sat in an attic since '65. It runs like a champ (after a few replaced parts) but no water out the back end. I can shoot hose up the intake and get water but it will not pump on its own. Anyone with any ideas???. I have exploded diagram and am positive the parts were put back in original position. could other seals be so bad that water is shooting out the pump shaft before it makes it up the water jacket?

It also appears that large amount of air is coming from around prop area. Could the pump be pumping backward?

3 issues to look for:

1-Did you put back the key that holds the impeller to the drive shaft ?

2-Is the impeller housing/engine water pipe connected correctly ?

3-Impeller cannot rotate backwards as it turns in same direction along with drive shaft, What you might have done is when placing/closing the impeller housing on impeller top, have rotated shaft counter clock wise, when you should rotate it clockwise. Engine rotates CW. Check all issues. Good luck.

Happy Boating
