goes forward in reverse

was out in the water today and when i went to put the boat in reverse it went forward. any suggestions on what to look for. is this a common problem. i have a 3.7 mercrueser 170

What year, what drive?

Have you ever had this boat out before?

Is it going reverse in forward?

Is it going into neutral when you put it in neutral?

it is an 87 searay deville with a 3.7 170 engine. this is actually the first time i had it out. boat runs great. when i put in neutral it was still going foward. when i put in reverse it was still in forward.

Did someone replace the impeller recently?

Ayuh,.... Then the lower unit was Improperly reinstalled....

Everything wasn't held in Forward gear during assembley....

is there a way i can do it in stead of taking it back to who did it. i am mechanicly inclined as i am an auto tech. but i have notice things are alittle different.
