fired the SportCraft on muffs this morning. everything OK. got the van and hitched up, pulled the boat out of the back yard, loaded for short cruise. Launched, started fine, then acted like it had a spun prop. so i limp back to the dock, load, and come home. go to investigate. the Muffs were still on the lower unit, the hose connection pulled out. HOW STUPID DO I FEEL. I deserve a demotion for this one.

Could have been worse. You could have forgotten the plug. :)

Hey, We're all human  Glad to hear it was nothing serious wrong ;)

Wait, I got one for ya, last year I hitched up the jetski, started it at home (just to make sure its ok), then the bride, & I, headed off to the lake 20miles, got to the ramp, prepped to go in, and I look, no lanyard  Oops! left it on accidently, and lost it on the trip! no tools either  the bride is anxious, no stores around  So I turn around, drive down the road 2 miles to the nearest marina (a Mercury dealer) sure enough he just happened to have a Yamaha lanyard! $9 with tax :( but it was well worth it! We got to go out, and have fun,,, but the old lady, never lets me forget it. Wouldn't ya know, on the way home, 2miles from the house, in the middle of the road, there is my run over crushed lanyard, & whistle.

Let TD's foible be a lesson to all of us.

A "walk around" is mandatory before the boat leaves the driveway or ramp.

When you trip over that hose, attached to the muffs, that's your first clue that something is amiss.:p:D

No way I'm gonna tell you about the time I swapped a hot water line with a fuel line after a carb rebuild on my 1962 Johnson V-4 75HP. The only good news is I tried to start it on muffs and not in the salty stuff around here!

I seem to forget SOMETHING every time too. Maybe it's because I've only been out 3 times thus far. Can't wait to go out again! Nice day today but the wife is working. :(

Glad to hear the motor was ok.

Its great to able to laugh at yourself. I'm heading to the boat in a few hours. (I'll be sure I double check everything before I leave) so I don't have to post a story myself on Monday.

Whole lot better than finding a hoseless gas nozzle sticking out of the filler
I've seen quite a few pictures of that on the web

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

Just to make this totally clear. The hose fitting pulled out because you also didn't disconnect the water hose? In that case you not only launched with the muffs on but also pulled the boat from the yard with the water hose still connected.

I'm not putting you down for this as I can see how it would easily happen.;) I have spent some time working on my outboard and usually leave the muffs on between tests. The other day I got home from work and was in a hurry to head to the lake to test some latest adjustments and I noticed at the last check that the muffs were still on from several days before. It reminded me of Iboats.:D

As far as the demotion, I believe the rules state that as long as you confess within 12 hours you are forgiven by the boat gods and thus are not subject to any further penalization.

Nope, you should get a promotion. Lessen learned and you'll never do it again.
I have a bad habit of leaving the ears on although not with the hose connected.
Once (and only once) I've launched and idled out into the river only to discover
upon getting her up on plane that the ears were still on. After it hit me, they popped of on their own and became property of Davie Jones.

PS - it takes a big man to admit this one considering the audience.

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

thats better than no muffs at all.

not a real long or even real funny but (im not a real good story teller):

i had a buddy that just bought a boat. well he called me and said "ive got a problem the warning buzzer keeps going off." so i tell him "ill be there in a minute".....so i get there and have a beer then we proceed towards the boat and i ask him "where are the muffs" and he says "the what?"

he had no idea he needed water to start it. lesson learned

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

Right after I got my most recent boat project finished, I had it out on a 3 day scout get together at the lake. I had it only out on 2 test runs beforehand, so I hadn't gotten real used to it. Friday night, I pull it off the trailer, and instead of heading straight over to where we beached them, I ran about a half mile up the lake and back, without a problem. Beached it, and 30 minutes later, dad went to take it on a run. Couldn't get the dang thing to start. The starter solenoid wouldn't click or anything. Figured the solenoid was going bad, as one of the two we had acted goofy while working on the motor. We figured that I had accidentally installed the wrong one, and it finally crapped. We couldn't hit it hard enough while attached, so we pulled it out, smacked it a few times with a wrench, and bench tested it on the battery, and it worked fine. Put it back in, no go.
Next morning, dad gets up, drives to the house, gets the second one and a few more tools to make it easier to install. Puts it in - no go. Bench tests both of them, and they both work 12 out of 12 times. Alright, that isn't the problem. Spent time working the voltmeter, and finally traced it back to the neutral safety switch. Apparently, neutral on this tiller outboard has a wider range of travel than the switch. So even though the motor was in neutral, it wasn't engaging the neutral safety switch. The funny thing is, when working on the motor, we realized that someday that neutral safety switch would cause a problem, and we probably should disable it. We also both made a mental note to check that switch if we ever had a problem. Still haven't disabled that stupid switch, and am about sick of having to wiggle the shifter to start the motor.

Re: TD'S Biggest Goof Ever

i dont know if i would disable that switch.

i had a shifter cable that the outside housing was broken and frayed but i thought well its just the shifter if i have to ill pull the cowl and shift it by hand...........bad idea one time before i fixed it - it didnt shift and when i was trailering the boat i pulled back to reverse to slow down ............wrong.....she shot forward and almost gave me and the wife a heartattack and i could have sworn it pushed the truck up the ramp a foot when i hit the trailor luckily i was dead on with the trailer
