Well i blew up my johnson 150.

anyone know where i can a used powerhead. or what power heads will work.

it was a 1996 Johnson 150 carb'd not a fast strike. had low hours. i dont know what went, but i got No compression on one cylinder and about 40 psi on the adjacent. im going to check out my head gasket, but its not looking to hot.

A couple of things - a Fast Strike is a carb'd motor and the powerhead will work. That motor does not have head gaskets.

What spark plugs are you using?

Re: Blown Johnson 150

Im guessing my fuel pressure problem caused a lean scenario and dried up middle cylinder port side there is a hole in the piston and in the block sleeve

junk!

what are the year ranges i need to look for, for a new power head?

150 / 175 evinrude / johnson 89-02 60 degree?????

any info on range i can use would be great.. were the 200's the same powerhead

You have options, depending on your wallet and how much of a hurry you are in.

Start here to get prices on powerhead exchange

http://www.boatmotors.com/motorparts/

With the factory manual, you may be able to sleeve that cylinder, new pistons, bearings, etc for a goodly amount less.

Wrong spark plugs.
It may have been fuel related but if you read enough posts you see a common theme with NGK plugs and blown pistons. They're too hot.

Can this be retitled?
There's something about "Blown Johnson" that just doesn't seem right

Re: Blown Johnson 150

well im pondering upon fixing my 96 150 with a cracked piston, hole in cylinder wall or buying a 120/120/120/80 compression 98 115 i guess i will decide after the inspection, thanks for the tidbit about the NGK's thats quite interesting. yes the other plugs did look pretty lean, but i have good normal compression on the 3 cylinders on the left bank. 1 cylinder on the other bank has normal compression.

i think fixing the 115 maybe the cheaper route to go originaly. (depending on inspection)

and when i get the time resleeving the 150..

Im gonna pull the power head for winter. i should have a consderable amount of work ahead of me..

im just curious how much the machine shop will charge. i hate paying people for labor.

Re: Blown Johnson 150

Ditto on paying mechanics labor rates, most guys here do everything prep-wise then just have the machining done, rates vary with location but around $100 a pop I think. Plus pistons $100-120 ea depending on the quality chosen, rings extra.

A local place rebuilds 6cyl 150's for $3600, I think you could do it for $1000.
Its not cheap but look at the price of a new one.

Re: Blown Johnson 150

if you can find a resonable machine shop marine type
you can dissassemble take them your block they will give ya a price
here it is thirty a hole pistons can usually be gotten cheaper by the shop
that also gives them the piston they are going to bore to,
inspect bearings replace what ya have to ebay has some good deals on gasket kits or rebuild kits hope fully ya can get out doing a few holes and the carbs i spent about 1000 on the crossflow i just built ,and that was all 6 holes
rings 1 rod bearing center main bearing full gasket set and one rod bearing
and three carb kits , but it was a process ,takes patience if ya dont do it
for a living factory manual a must
good luck
