I just bought an older Evenrude 7.5. It sees to run fine w/ the cover off, but with the cover on, at higher rpms, it chokes and eventually dies. I don't think there is any kind of shorting going on or any contact from the cover with any part of the motor.

I've been reading through some posts and it seems like the exhaust leak theory is the best one, but how do I determine this is the problem and how do I fix it. Remember this is an old motor and I don't want to sink a bunch of $$$ into it. Also I am running it in a barrel, could this be the issue, how do I eliminate this as the cause ( except taking it out on the ocean )?

Trouble shooting help is greatly appreciate, make sure to keep it simple 'cause I am not experienced with the technical names of every part....

Thanks and Sail On!

it will get more exhaust in the barrel. maybe in the open it may run fine. troubleshooting is pulling the powerhead. i would try the open water first.

Most likely the powerhead to mid section gasket. Not hard or expensive to do.

first try in on open water. running mine in a barrel I have to put a fan on them or the exhaust will kill them every time

It was made to run on a boat. Get it out of that barrel. It chokes to death on it's own exhaust smoke.
