'95 70 HP johnson quit running, next day I fired it up and it ran for 30 second and died, tested all cylinders for spark, no spark, installed my original power pack (i replaced it two years ago chasing a idle skip) the engine started up but stalled again and the stator began to SMOKE. I inspected my wiring for shorts to ground, removed the flywheel to look at the stator, the windings that smoked were very hot to the touch (with the key off and 1 hr later) I had also replaced the stator two years ago hunting that skip, the stator that smoked is not encapsulated like the original, the coil that burned is one of the six that are paired. anyone seen this scenario?

Lots of times, and usually related to a failed rectifier that is allowing an open circuit to permit the full battery voltage to reach the ignition system. That is not the only reason possible, but the most likely one.

See the thumbnail below:

thanks ezeke, I have always heard that poor connections at the battery would destroy your charging system,I have tightenend all connections and re-installed the original stator and control unit and am concerned that I might fry it as well if I have a faulty rectifier, there is a small drip of goo on the back of the rectifier, could I isolate the rectifier and retry the running, I would not mind if my skip came back at this point! that "ignition off" draw went away on it's own, when I noticed the stator was hot I disconnected the battery and reconnected the battery, no draws now.

The rectifier is not necessary for operating the motor, only for charging the battery and operation of the tachometer.

My advice would be to remove the rectifier until you can replace it.
