Merc 470 thermostat postition

I need to change my thermostat on the closed cooling system on my 1980. In a book I have the drawing is confusing to me as to how the thermostat is postioned.

I know you take off the upper tank off the manifold and the thermostat is between them. But is it supposed to sit in the opening so the spring part of it is pointing down, or as it appears in the drawing, up?

What would happen if it was in upside down?
