I've been trying to get my Bayliner Capri motor up and running, I finally got a flusher so I could work on it a bit in the yard. Well after taking a look while it was running I think I have found what I assume is a large issue.

There seems to be a leak coming from just above the vent screw in the lower unit.

I have taken some pics, the quality isn't the best but I'm hoping that someone can provide some assitance.

Wow, I thought I was the only one with this problem... I just bought my Bayliner a week ago and ran it on the hose, saw the same leak. I ordered a manual and was going to read it before posting it up here, but I'm glad you did, and from what wayne is saying, it must be normal.

if u look really close u will see a hole next to the back side of the bolt .. u might have to lay on your back and turn the muffs on .. but it is casted into the lower unit .. i have 3 other lower units they all have the same hole but i dont want to take any of them apart yet to see just where that holes goes and why .. maybe some kinda bypass hole since these motors dont have teetail holes ? i dont know for use .. i looked in the book and there is nothing about it

Those holes are for draining water and gas/oil resido. That would be for normal activity. On my 1989, 85hp, there was excess oil leaking out, looked like lower unit gear oil.I removed lower unit and found the shift rod bellow seal was dry rotted and letting the lower unit oil leak out. It could also be leaking from the drive shaft seal. Drain your lower unit gear oil and check for water. This should be fixed before being used again. hope this helps

okay, the hole is suppose to be there. It allows the water to drain after use, therefore no water gets trapped in the unit. I just had the seals replaced as well as the water pump impeller costs with labor at $75 = a total bill of $220. Nothing like a great boat mechanic and piece of mind when your on the water!
