6hp fisherman cooling

I am new to this forum and to outboard engines and have a question about engine cooling. I have a 6hp fisherman that I believe is an Evinrude and the serial number is 6702D. I believe from reading other threads that this is a 1967 engine? When this engine is running is there supposed to be a stady stream of water "peeing" from the back of the engine just above the waterline? I am only seeing a little spitting from what I think is the outlet. I have read some threads regarding this and am unsure if there was a design change and if this engine is supposed to have a solid stream or not.
thanks for any help in advance.

That is the exhaust relief port. There is supposed to be water blowing out there with exhaust. Not a steady stream.

thank you for you quick reply. I have a little water blowing out with the exhaust. Was unsure if I may be running in to trouble. Engine runs strong and now I can enjoy not rowing anymore!

If you have not changed the impeller or do not know that it has been changed in the past couple of years, I strongly urge you to change it now. It's the best possible insurance against water pump failure and consequent overheating and engine damage.

You might want to check the thermostat also. Its located on top of the cylinder head - look for a small, triangular shaped cover with three bolts in it.

I find the best way to know the running temp of your engine is to feel the head around the spark plugs after you have run it for 5 min or so at WOT (ensure you are getting a cooling spray before doing this though). It should be very warm to the touch but not hot enough that you have to pull your hand away. And water should not sizzle off it when splashed onto it.

Thank you for your replies. Does this mean that the engine has no pee stream at all? Where does the water exit from the cooling system, or it it just the spray from the exhaust relief port?
Thank you

Some of it comes out the relief port but most of it goes out with the underwater exhaust behind the propeller.

With the introduction of "pee" streams in later years, everybody seems to think they should have one. Truth is, the "pee" is ahead of the cooling system and it could be peeing fine but not circulating through the rest of the powerhead. The water blowing out the backside has gone through the powerhead and done it's job of cooling it. Doesn't take much of a genius to figure out which is the most reliable indicator, does it?
