Question about 1995 EVINRUDE 115HP OUTBOARD

I need a motor for my 1989 18' Procraft 1780V. I found a 1995 115HP evinrude that has good compression in all holes except #4, it only has 25 LBS. I would like to know if this will be enough motor for my boat and if this is a common problem with this engine. I have not seen the engine in person yet but I'm kinda thinking head gasket. What would be a fair price for this engine?

Welcome to iboats.

It would have to be a heck of a deal, especially if I was not able to pull the heads and have a look see. Very likely not a head gasket issue alone.

Especially if it's a 1995 115 looper. They don't have head gaskets....

I had no idea they didn't have head gaskets.What could cause there to be low compression in one hole?

What is a looper

A 90* crossflow does have head gaskets. The 60* looper V4s have O rings. If you get the model number we can tell which you have.

The only # he gave me is the serial # O3832478.It's not much help but it's all I got.

Dhadley will be able to explain it much better than myself, but to put it simply, the looper is the newer design.

The crossflows hava a wedge shape on the top of the pistons per se. The incoming mixture gets deflected by that wedge upwards and pushes the exhaust gasses out.

A looper on the other hand achieves the same thing without the wedge. It uses ports to flow the new mixture to the top of the head, in a "loop" you might say. They are a bit more fuel economical since the pistons are lighter and they have a more efficient fuel combustion chamber.
