i posted a previous thread 1977 evinrude idle probs. Any way for quick update. It has a low idle below 500rpms,if i put it into N and back into gear it stalls,to get it back running i have to start put choke to high rev put the choke down and quickly put into gear. Also when just in gear and try to plane it hesitates bad and feels like theres nothing there. I can get it going by playing with the throttle. Runs fine wot and is fine a half throttle and doesn't hesitate going from half to full. And seems to get worse as the day goes on. Any way im looking at a couple things before i take it to a marina. But when ever i take the engine cover off all i can smell is fuel. And i haven't drove the boat for about a week. The smell of fuel comes from the bottom left side of the carbs were the fuel lines go in. What should i be looking for besides bad hoses.

Re: fuel leak?

you idle is too low, should be 600-750 in gear in the water, adjust your idle speed. alse the lever you lift to speed up the motor is a fast idle lever use for starting a cold motor. it is not the choke. the choke is a black button, usually under the key, or you push the key in to activate the choke.
the motor must be in goos shape and tuned very well for it to idle at 500.

Re: fuel leak?

yea it will idle at 450-500 but not to well and sometimes will die. To raise the idle u just turn the adjustment screw in towards the boat right. Well i gues i figure it out anyway. thanks for everyones help and advice.

Re: fuel leak?

Have you taken the cover off the motor and pumped up the ball? The pressure from pumping up the ball might show you where the leak is coming from.

agreed pumpthe ball and keep constant pressure while looking it will reveal andy leak sice it will be more pressure than the system could ever put on it. It it leaks on its own this will also show a leak and faster than the leak is too.

Re: fuel leak?

to increase idle you turn the idle speed stop screw clockwise. then tighten the lock nut.
