How do I determine what is causing the fowl plugs. It idles great but as soon as I cut it loose the motor dies. The top plug is fowling, but the bottom does not look bad. Its missing a little when I up the rpms in neutral, but does not die unless in gear. I also have some gas/oil coming out the front of the carb.

What model plugs and the gap? Gas coming out is probably the needle valve not seating in the carb. You may have to clean/rebuild carb.

Fouled plugs are usually caused by motor running too cold or too rich. Have you tested the thermostat operation?

Re: 92 evinrude 28 hp fowling plungs

I am using autolite xs 4093 plugs, gap not sure. I just ordered the 91-94 evinrude/johnson 2-300 hp manual. Im thinking it has to be the needle seat in the carb. I checked volt on both coils and got the same result. I also checked compression and got 120 out of both cylinders.

Get the correct Champion plugs which your motor was designed to work with. I don't think you'll be too happy with the manual if it's not an OEM book. The 3rd party manuals are short on important details.

Re: 92 evinrude 28 hp fowling plungs

thanks again, hopefully the cleaned carb will do the job. I got way too much money into my boat and not enough fishing going on! It ran pretty good the first 4 times out this summer.

should this motor on a 14' sabre craft haul 3 adults totaling 650 lbs, and i ask because it wasn't until I did that that I noticed any problems.

Motor should plane that boat. I had a 28HP on a 14' fibreglass Starcraft similar to a Whaler and it planed the boat just fine, but not too fast, say ~ 25 MPH.

i would expect 25 with 2 people, you have the same problem i have with one of my boats, you either put a person up front, or you both are basically in the stern making it harder to plane.

Carb should not be "pretty clean", it should be spotless after soaking in carb solvent and blowing dry with compressed air. Most have the float even with the bowl parting line, but I don't have a manual for your motor.
