I have an 1985 Bass Tracker with a 1985 Merc 50hp 4cyl that has always
been a great motor. Yesterday I took off to go fishing and went about 2
miles and the motor started slowing down. When I looked back there was
no water comming out of the pee hole. (no warning buzzer!!!) Pulled the
cowling off and the motor was hot enough to boil water when I splashed
a little on the head. Waited till the motor cooled down and restarted motor
did not seem to miss or run rough--started normally-- but still no water out
of hole... Got pulled in and pulled the lower unit, found the impeller rubber
piece spinning on the bronze inner sleeve. Since the motor started normally
do you think any major damage has been done. I am going to do a compression check this afternoon and I am going to look into my cylinders
with a bore scope. Is there anything else I need to look for before replacing
the impeller and putting back in the water?

Thanks

Re: Overheated 50hp

I'm not sure what else you should check that your not already doing but I will say this. Don't just buy the impeller. Buy the whole water pump kit. I made that mistake just last week. With the kit you will get the impeller, new gaskets, new housing etc. As long as your in there might as well do it right.
