bad ring on 1985 150 evenrude xp

had the boat out last week and when i loaded it on the trialer i heard a pop. went home checked compression top cyl was pushing 10 or 15. pulled the head and it had lost about an inch long piece of the top ring into the exughst port. the motor wasnt run long after this happend no cyl. marks. could i get away with just replacing the rings on all cyl. THANKS

You need to tear it down and see if you have any piston scuffing. If aluminum from the piston has laminated to the side of the cylinder liner, you will have to change your overhaul plans. The big thing is to determine why you lost the ring-the reason for the failure. You don't want to repair it until you know what caused the failure. Lack of lubrication, advanced timing, debris in the the high speed jet, carbon on the piston skirt, failed ring locator, etc.
