Yamaha gauge swap?

Ahoy folks. I have a 1996 Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke on a 19' Sylvan Sport Select that has the Yamaha multi function digital gauges. The display on the Tach combo unit (RPM, trim, oil level, temp., etc) is unreadable. Can I swap this unit over to individual analog gauges and warning lights without issues? It appears from the information I have that there is no control function on this unit, it is display only. I just purchased this boat and have no documentation (service manual) so if anyone can direct me to a wiring diagram it would be appreciated as I need to identify the wires in the pig-tail. (preferably on-line as there are no dealers close by).
My first post on this forum. I have been reading for some time and appreciate the knowledge and experience that is shared here.

Cheers

Re: Yamaha gauge swap?

Please post if this works out for you. I have the same problem.

I worked on the speed gauge today. I THINK..... there are 2 ground wires which are black, a blue wire which is the nighttime running backlight, the yellow wire coming from the key switch is the switched power and the red is the constant power for the memory. The other wire is the fuel gauge I would assume. You may just have a bad ground or power supply. I tried hooking mine up directly to 12v and still had the faded look. I hooked 2blk to ground and the yellow and red to positive and left our the fuel send and the blue nighttime light. I did check to make sure 12v is the power and the yellow and red were both at 12. You can try this to see if you just have a short, but its just a theory of mine. I figured mine are broken and what harm could I do, but try it at your own risk. The other gauge is still a mystery to me with the exception of the above wires (although I think the green is the tach send but not sure)

My lcd screens look odd, I think they get overheated in the sun and expand too much,,,,,,but it's only a theory. Let me know how the analog stuff works out for you.

Re: Yamaha gauge swap?

Thanks for posting a reply. The issue I have is with the tach. The LCD display is so dim it's unreadable. I understand this has been an issue with these gauges. Mine have gone through several freeze/thaw cycles (I live in Canada). I would like to replace the gauges with an analog set but I have been told that there may be compatibility issues with the Yamaha (proprietary stuff). I fugure that if the signal coming in to the gauges hasn't been altered or conditioned in any way then it should be fairly straight forward to change over. Just wondering if anyone has swapped theirs over.
As for your wiring, here's a site that may help you.

Re: Yamaha gauge swap?

I have the opposite problem. I have an '87 Yamaha 200 and the tach gauge is totally stripped out inside and sunbaked so that the painted RPM numbers are flaking off inside. The needle just bounces along at the topped out end which is impossible. The idiot lights work and the buzzers sound in the control box. What I need is a replacement gauge so that my idiot lights work. I don't mind sticking with the analogue needle but can't track down a replacement. I've considered just putting in an aftermarket analogue tach but I would like the idiot lights if possible. Can't find what I want and can't pin down the wires.
