Okay someone help me out here. I think have a bad trim motor. So in order to replace it. I need to trim the engine up to get to it. The problem is the engine is locked in the down position. I have loosened the manual release valve and was able to move it up a few inches, while holding the switch. Now it is stuck and will only go down.

I doubt that it is your trim motor that is at fault.

Start by switching the relays and see if it will now go up but now down, if so, you have found your problem. Will be a much easier and cheaper fix.

Test the motor before making any purchases. If it is shot, it is much cheaper to rebuild than to buy new.

Once the manual valve is open, it takes quite a bit of force to raise the LU. Try getting some help. The trim switches won't help with the manual valve open. Note, that when you get the LU up, you will need to block it up, or it will just drop down.

Oh, yeh, make sure the relays aren't the cause as HT pointed out.

That motor will have a tilt lock built into the transom bracket. It will hold the motor in the fully tilted position, while you work on the PTT system.

Ya all of those suggestions were tried. I switched the relays, blocked the unit from falling any further and used a pick up with a winch to pull on the unit to raise it. Still no results. im thinking the hydraulic fluid needs to be drained.
