1983 evinrude 150 ,the diagram on evinrude only shows a shift shaft cover gasket , and and o ring underneath is that all there is there to leak
looks easy enough .if any one knows what else could leak there

Re: shift shaft leak

Except for the gasket on the cover, the o-ring is the seal.

If you take the cover off, it is fairly easy to change the seal. Just use a small awl or a sail needle to get the old o-ring out. Then a drop of oil and a couple of small dowels to put the new one in. A drop of oil on the new one, bend it in half and start it in then hit it from both ends with the dowels to force it into place.

While you have the cover off you can check the shaft to get it good and clean and make sure that it is smooth so it won't tear up your new o-ring. I usually grease the shaft with a little Triple Guard.

The newer gearcases have two o-rings for a better seal.
