Recently had boat mech change impekker on 7.5 Mercury. I don't know much about mechanics but illing to have a go. After about 20 min tell tale water stream weakens and turns to steam, if you then stop and blow down pipe and go again water starts to come out, but eventually turns to steam again.

Rang mech and suggests it could be the gromet ? where is it and how do you change it and or the side plate. I have had the side plate off and pocked a bit of wire down the hole where the water comes in but it still steams up.

Any help or instructions on repair would be great, I would like to learn how to do it myself and save some money.

The grommet he's talking about is under the powerhead and probablly not the probable as you describe it, you have pieces of the old impeller floating around the cooling system and they need to be removed both jobs require the same removal of the powerhead, in addition the removal of the exhaust covers and the waterjacket cover. You will need 1 base, 2 exhaust, 1 w/jacket gasket and the grommet to do the job properly.

I had the same problem in a 2000 50 hp 4 st. You have to pull the power head. The grommet sits on top of water intake pipe. Little rubber thing. $4.50
. It was easy with a manual. i went thru every possible water related item on the engine. I still had problems. with over heat. Finally got hold of Mercury in wisconson talked to a guy and diagnosed it right off the bat. Hard to believe the whole thing is based on a $5.00 seal. Of course it was much more , because you will have to buy a complete engine gasket set . Good luck
