i have an evinrude 200 outboard and it was damaged by a hit and run and i turned it into my insurance company and they sent a rep out and he told them the lower unit had frozen. i am military and worked around motors and water driven pumps in the nothern pacific and have never seen one freeze and bust the lower casing and bend the shaft. my question is how can the adjuster determine it froze without seeing the ice

Horizontal cracks along the bullet. But I'd ask him to explain the bent shaft.
Maybe he thinks you bent it?

Being military, you have access to legal aid. Insurance companies are notorious in their angles to avoid putting out money.... their interest is in obtaining money.

If you're speaking of having the gearcase break from freezing where the gears actually are, that area would need to be full of water to begin with. Pictures would be a big help.

However, would not the freezing damage be insured if that's actually what happened? It's not a fraudulent planning scheme designed to extort money from the company. Curious as to what insurance company.

What? Did getting hit cause a sudden drop in temperature?
So they are trying to say you had water in it, it froze, then you staged an accident to get it fixxed?
Freezing wouldn't explain a bent shaft though unless that happened in your "staged accident"
Good luck, last time I delt with an insurance company I came a 1/4 inch from going over the counter and beating the guy.
