Tilt Trim Problems

I have a 1995 Evinrude, 200 HP. The tilt trim switch on the throttle handle stopped working. The switch on the side of the motor still works. I am not getting power to the switch that does not work. I have tried to trace the wiring to see if there might be a fuse, but could not find one.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Re: Tilt Trim Problems

You have a choice to continue to trace that red wire on that PTT switch back to its 12 volt power source. Usually the problem is due to corrosion at a plug in connector, something of that nature.

The alternative (choice) is to supply 12 volts to that PTT switch red wire from another 12 volt source.

Re: Tilt Trim Problems

posted on another site...I had the same problem as you..

UPDATE..........Thanks Ludicrous and Whaler 27

I got it fixed. My previously posted trouble shooting worked at # 3.

I pulled the six prong plug off and then reattached. The UP still wouldn't work.

I then switched the green and blue wires. UP would work but not DOWN. OK we are getting some where. The problem lied in the switch itself.

Whaler27 was dead on about the switch. Take a flathead screw driver a place under the flange of the switch. Slowly work the switch out of its hole.

The switch is covered in a rubber boot. Very carefully peel the boot back over the button. You dont have to cut the rubber boot and its removal is not required to access the contacts.

The switch is two pieces attached by 2 small plastic latches on the top and bottom of the switch. Take apart 2 pieces. The metal cradle will fall out so be careful not to lose it. I was expecting a corroded switch. Much to the contrary.

The inside of my switch was spotless except for 4 areas (the 2 contacts areas on the UP and Down). This is due not to corrosion but the sparking that occurs when they contact causes some soot or burnt areas.

Take some WD40 and a toothpick and clean the 4 areas (the actual contact area is really small).

Reassemble switch and test. It should work.

Yamaha motor but the premise is the same. Probably corrosion at the trim switch on the throttle.
