Great Stuff spray foam from the hardware store is closed cell polyurethane foam. Has anybody used this as floatation foam in a boat?

No it won't grab water..stuff a piece in submerged water..stand back and grow old waiting..did a leaking roof to awning over my front porch..16 feet, and in the sun 10 years now. Trouble is, a can will cost ya more than the real thing...it don't go far..(did a few cardboards boxes full for "forms" my recent drag boat, stuffed the bow..been there, done that..go for it..but a can don't go far..

Your thinking here is it TRAPPING water in walls..then a problem..G/S itself WILL NOT SOAK WATER...not a problem used as floatation..can just don't go far. I have 3 (also) sheets of 2 inch 2x4 Foam Sheets for insulation of basement cement wall...any Home Depot..stuffed in the bow. Ya just want the boat floating after a flip (my case anyway), so ya ya have something to hang onto while help comes..

Well then I stand corrected. From my building days we would not use it where it was exposed to moisture per the manufactors recommendations. I guess they just didn't want to warantee it there.

I guess that the only other comment I would make is that Great Stuff adheres to surfaces. Although it's not all that tough to remove, I would think that using a regular foam would make it easier to access something or make boat modifications.

Re: Floatation foam versus great stuff

I just want a little extra flotation. I plan to put in a raised floor using 2x2's under plywood and I think the sheet insulation from home depot would work there. I was planning for the gs foam in the bow seat. The boat is a 14' Lund / Shell Lake Sportsman 314 from around 1967 or so. It is fiberglass and the bow seat / platform is hollow. I was looking at about 3 cans to fill this area with foam.

For the 2x2's the plan is to epoxy glass them to the current fiberglass floor, then place solid sheet insulation in there and screw plywood down over the top, into the 2x2's, and add a layer of carpet.

The trouble (as stated), its its really sticky stuff, and be heck to get out if ya wanted it out. The foam sheets (ones with blue backing, flexible) work great . I have some heavy duty 55 gallon garbage bags, and (3) 2 inchers 2x4 fit just right. Taped the end, and shoved way in the bow. Fit just right between the two stringers. It has a real low deck, (low profile), and hard to see.
On the GS foam, I made a cardboard box form, then lined it with a good garbage bag. Foamed it, and taped it up. That solves the sticky thing. Maybe you can do that, line it under the seat, then spray it in. That way it should pop right out if needed. Put a starp across to hold it in..??...theres ways
