Drained gear oil today; I only use Merc high performance and color was the same as when i put it in. however, there were a few metal shavings on the magnet on the end of the plug, none in the oil. is this something to be concerned about? when shifting the motor makes a loud CLUNK, rather than clutch dog rattle. probably due to it swinging a large heavy ss prop. im actually more concerned about the CLUNK than the shavings, non of the johnnyrudes ive run ever made that loud of a noise when shifting

The reason there is a magnet on the drain plug is because they expect some fine metal flakes from normal operation, fishdog.

Nothing to worry about.

That "clunk" suggests that your idle speed may be a bit high or you are shifting without idling her all the way down.

I agree with the previous answer, there will be some normal wear and tear with a few metal flakes on the magnet. If it clunks when you engage it in gear....your idle is too high

Re: Mercury 80 shavings in unit

i got the idle down to about 500-600rpm. still a huge clunk, very nasty sounding and 30% of the time would die as soon as it went into gear. when i throttle it up it sounds great and runs about 45mph at 5500 rpm. the prop is a 19p SS quicksilver that the previous owner had on it.
im rebuilding the carbs anyway because they haven't been rebuilt since i bought it. but any other ideas?
