Visitors to The Hideout frequently remark on how quiet it is here.

Today there is a major storm just northwest of Wichita Falls, about 100 miles from here.

Even without my hearing aids I can hear the thunder.

JB,
What is "The Hideout"? Is it your place or part of a particular area or what? Do you live on a lake?
curious,

My home, The Hideout, is 120 acres of undeveloped range and woodland just east of the community of Whitt, TX (pop. 35), JBJ. It is 15 miles from the nearest city (Mineral Wells) and about 50 miles from Ft. Worth.

No lake. I do have three tanks (ponds), including a 3 acre fishpond just rehabilitated and soon to be stocked with bass, bluegills, channel cat and forage.

Nope. Big natural gas. I am right in the middle of the Barnet Shale gas field and the drilling company rehabbed my fishpond so they could buy water from me. :)

Then there was a guy that was walking down the street here the other day and he was looking up into the sky and asked me "Hello, can you tell me, Is that the sun or the moon thats up there?" I told him " Uhhh im not sure, Im not from around here". WTF So then They wanted to fly a rocket to the sun for exploration. JB, if your property is sitting right next to a major gas field, you might want to consult a Professional Landman, to see if there are any "unitization" issues that would result in royalties for you! At current prices for crude, gas liquids and gas, you could find yourself receiving some pretty hefty payments!

Better yet, get them to drill a few wells on that 120 acres and collect "a fit" (20%) in landowner royalties! I used to know an "ole boy" down here in south Louisiana who was paid $40,000 a month for the wells on his property! He didn't change his lifestyle much, but he did have one heck of a Dodge 3500 "pick-em-up-truck," with a custom aluminum bed, running boards and cattle pusher!

Re: Is this peace and quiet?

I know that someone had to say it but im just trying to have fun on here. I dont mean to make anyone mad i just didnt understand and if i can get someone to smile about it then thats ok with me. I just think about this kinda stuff. You should have see what i said when someone else said that the lake would still be there. It had something to do with playing around with tie-downs. But the moral of that story was.... If you play around with your tie-downs to much then the lake will be gone and thats not too cool when you get to the lake and its gone! Ok well time to go out to the boat and put in some more glass. And play with my tie-downs. I wish piece and quiet to all!

Re: Is this peace and quiet?

Drew, Bro Haut's question about "BIG OIL" was because he knew that the drilling company footed the bill for rehabbing my fishpond. They dropped a ton on it because water is so precious here and they need it to fracture the shale and stimulate the production of the natural gas.

My pond drains about 250 acres of nearly vertical, badly eroded land and it collects water very fast in only moderate rains. Rather than import water from wells in the area at $.15 per bbl (and deplete the aquafers in the area), they rehabbed my pond to hold about 100,000bbl. I agreed to sell them that water at $.10 per bbl. It takes about 2" of rain to fill the pond. One gullywasher thunderstorm, then, is worth somewhere around $10,000, and saves the gas well guys about $5,000. That is why they spent about $30,000 desilting and enlarging the pond.

They are not going to drill on The Hideout, but they have leased 5 acres for their water storage facility (called a "Frac Pit") and will buy water from us as long as they are operating in this area. The mineral rights lease has expired.

Does that help relieve the confusion?

Re: Is this peace and quiet?

JB, I'm jealous! I'll bet with little water around you have a few ducks on those ponds in the winter from time to time. Interesting about the pond rehab. A good deal for every one!
My "hideout" is a little ways out of town but not far enough. I live on an original land grant so my land has never been sold unless you count the LA purchase. My mother's family had hundreds of acres in the area but my grandad had to sell all but 42.5 acres of his in the depression, of which I inherited 10 acres. My uncle still has the original deed to the land grant, signed by Pres. Grover Cleveland. Just down the road about a 1/4 mile from me is the prettiest 20 acres on Black bayou lake surrounded on three sides by water and the road on the 4th side. My grandad had to sell it for 200 bucks worth of debt in the late 30's or 40's. The present owner turned down 80,000 for it recently.
Anyway, your place sounds beautiful.
later,
JBJ
