I dropped my 1993 Evinrude 115hp off at an outboard shop and knew it needed a waterpump
Heres the news...
1)overheating
2)needs waterpump
3)needs thermostat

Guy said that if the waterpump and the thermostat don't fix the overheating than the overheating obviously is from something else.

I have no experience at all working on boat outboards. Pretty new to boating.

Should I fork out the $500 or so including labor to have him put those two things in or should I buy a repair manual and do them both myself???
How hard is it for a newbie to put a new waterpump and thermostat in???

Thanks in advance for helping...

Is it a bubbleback?? If it is, it will be hard to get to, not impossible, just more difficult. I did mine by drilling 3 holes in the lower pan to access the bolts. Then filled the holes with headliner plugs from the autoparts store. Just 3 black plastic circles there now. I think its worth it to learn to do it your self. Waterpump is pretty easy, and costs about $60 for the kit. Thermostats cost me about, $40, but I replaced everything except the housing. 2 hrs on the WP(1st time) and about 3 hrs on the thermostats. (with plenty of breaks). Oh, and on the thermostats you'll need 5 hands with 11 fingers. :)

Newer boater myself....figure out how to do it yourself my friend, its way cheaper and much more satisfying. I am almost hoping my motor has a problem soon so I can tackle it....LOL. But seriously, knowledge is power.

I can tell you that I purchased my house years ago and it came with an inground pool....after the first service call....I figured I would do it myself or swim in green water. 9 years later, I can take the whole system apart and put it back toghether again without a sweat....saved tons of money and have the satisfaction of knowing that I am not at someone elses mercy.

Just a quick comment on this post, but I do have a question. I am looking at the same motor/year/hp on another boat...whats a bubbleback?

Thx

I just replaced the water pump and T stat on my 1980 70hp johnson, and I can tell you I have no mechanical apptitude at all but with the input from people on here and a service manual I did it for about 80 or 90 dollars.

There's two types of exhaust covers. The flat back and the bubble back. The flat cover is . . . well flat. The bubble back looks like a baby's butt at the bottom (minus the split down the middle).

iwombat,It is apparent that you are the E-Man here on this forum , I have the same or a similar problem as chads30 I am affraid ,I have not had it in a shop as of yet .Same motor and I went out this morning ,put my ear muffs on it turned the water on and have no water coming to the top thru the pee hole to cool my motor,so it appears that I am going to have to replace or have my water pump replaced and it is most definatly not in our budget at this time.Do you know where I can get a good exploded view pic of this motor and procedure to change it myself online ?Thanks for Any help.

whether you should tackle it yourself depends on YOUR mechanical ability. As said ,the v-4 engines can be a bear to get at the thermostats.Located bottom rear of engine, held with 3 bolts that can be hard to get at.A good hint drilling holes makes it easier. If it is a salt used motor.could be harder if bolts are frozen ,and you dont want to break them.If you own the tools that enable you to get access to the bolts and want to try to see if you can loosen them. Then go for it.The therm.job is harder in my opinion then the pump.If your eng.is salt used, you may have issues beyond the pump/thermos.But I doubt it.There is possibility of salt build up (or sand)in the cooling passages, but the thermo pump is first place to start. You should try to change the impeller yearly.Dont know where you live, but,in S.Fl.we often remove the thermostats.remove the guts from them by cutting the bottom of 2 sides and the center, this will allow a sufficent amt of resistance ,yet allows the crud to pass through without settling in the thermos and causing failure=overheat.
KELLY,it is advised you start your own post. Many people read and pick the subjects they truly know, thus, your problem may not be seen. However, just because your pee tube dont pee, dont mean your not pumping, the small tube OFTEN plugs up and water wont come out.Bugs love to nest in them.Does your eng alam sound,is the head to hot to hold your hand on.If not.Your peee tube may need flushing.Sometimes just shooting the hose up it does the trick,or a piece of wire, often the threaded nipple into the block needs removal and wire pushed into block.Good luck guys

Thank You very much I did not think of some of these things , but will surely consider all your help tho.I will try to flush the tube out before I get real deep in it ,as I said it isn't really a budgeted expense so I will have to see what I can do to save a bit where I can. that gives me some hope tho. :)

What do you have in the way of tool's? A basic socket set won't get you very far.

I got all kinds of tools , but if I can keep from it I won't just arbitrarily tear into it , because if I get in there and don't know what I am doin It'll cost me more than I can afford to loose.so If I can I won't get in there.I ordered me a shop manual a little bit ago , so I won't do anything til I get it anyway .:) thanks .

For working on an outboard, you will find a 1/4" drive socket set with wobbler sockets a very handy addition. Along with a set of extensions.

If this was my engine, I would replace the water pump, and put it back together and test it. There may be nothing wrong with the thermostat. You have to replace the water pump anyway, so you're losing nothing by doing it one step at a time.
