Re: 1956 15hp johnson ?'s

Samo, I had a freind of mine paint the hood and I did the lower. There are still bargains out there if you take the time to look around. I got lucky and bought the 54 and a 58 18hp with two tanks for $150.

Re: 1956 15hp johnson ?'s

Now I'm upset the guy that asked me if I wanted to buy his 15hp spent the time to figure out the shipping and tell me and then today says no I want to keep it. WTF is that? I've looked at so many and a few either weren't what I wanted or passed up because I had found a better on and then they don't work out. I've posted adds and surf ebay. I'm thinking weather to just put all the money toward my main hobby my jeep. If any body here has a 15hp or 10hp they would like to sell me pm me!:(

Sahara,
I'm very suprised to hear you didn't have any luck on your AOMCI ad. Those guys fixed me up QUICK. And for very reasonable prices. You should try another one and see if you get some bites. But plan on paying about 300 at least shipping and all. Of course, those 15's are so nice that noone wants to give 'em up. I love all mine and couldn't part with 'em.
Hope you find one.
How 'bout a pic of that green jeep?

Hit it or shake it and if you hear loose stuff in it you need a new one. I have a flowmaster 40 on mine.:D

Well that add I posted got me alot of options so I picked a 1955 15hp evinrude and the guy was toatling up the shipping and he just stoped emailing me after we had talked for a few days so I emailed him and after a week never responded.:( So the other day a guy emailed me and wanted to sell me a 1956 15hp johnson exactly what I want so next sat he is going to a meet in ct so I'm going to buy it from him for 175$ with no tank or 200$ with tank.:D I think it had electric start because of the fly wheel and it looks like a electric choke solinoid on it.

Wow... it looks in great shape. Did you get the compression #'s off of it? And yes, it looks like it was electric start where the mount was.

Fancy fuel line hoses...

Nice find and a decent deal. That's one motor I have yet to add to my collection.

Sahara,
It was definitely e-start. You've got the electric choke, geared flywheel, starter bracket. All you need is a starter, solenoid, and starter button to have electric start. I think that those '56 starters may be 6volt though. Neat motor and good price for sure. I'd definitely get the tank with it! Don't forget the fuel line connector...

High speed and low speed mixture. One sets the mixture at idle, the other when wide open.

Re: 1956 15hp johnson ?'s

Top knob is idle speed adjust, called the low-speed jet. Bottom is the high-speed jet. Turn both clockwise gently until they stop, don't torque them down. Back the top jet out counterclockwise 1 and 1/2 half turns. Back the high-speed jet out 3/8 to 3/4 turn. Run the motor in a barrel or on the boat, with leg submerged of course. Get it runnning and throttle up slowly, adjust the high-speed knob a little, generally clockwise (lean), until it runs best at speed then turn it counterclockwise a little (rich). Now tighten the nut around the needle, behind the face plate, until it takes some effort to turn the needle. It should be tight enough that the adjustment you made won't come undone with vibrations from the motor running. Adjust the low-speed jet the same way, throttle down to an idle and adjust to find its sweet spot. Tighten that nut, too. If you do this with the motor in a barrel/tub, you'll have to readjust/tweak both settings a little once on the lake. After that is done, note the settings for future reference. I like to loosen the knob screws after I find each setting, reset the top knob so it's pointing to 6 oclock and lock it in that position. I set the bottom knob at 12 oclock. Be sure not to turn the jets when you're tightening down the knob screws, you have to hold the jet shaft with a pliers, etc.
