Just curious if putting a new deck on top of the old one is a bad thing? Just bought a boat and have discovered this is what they did to put a "new" floor down.

Re: New Deck on Top of old Deck

I have heard of people doing this but i would be worried about the extra weight added. I think many do this to save time/labor but why not do it the right way tear out the old and replace.

GL either way.

Re: New Deck on Top of old Deck

hey big d

by deck... i expect you mean the floor?

if it is.....when you put the new wood over the old rotted wood...(thats why the deck is repaired ...cause its soft)

all your doing is putting a really heavy band aid on the boat....problem is ....boats dont heal themselves....the rot is still there...and will spread... to the stringers and transom....by the way....if the floor is soft....90 % chance the flotation foam is wet too....(if there is any foam in the boat).......

so its just a temporary thing.....kinda like turning up the music so you dont hear the engine knocking.!

hope that helps
cheers

I agree it is just a bandaid. Like bandaids, once they get wet they fall off. The deck is part of the structural integrity of the boat as well as the stingers. It adds weight and makes for a very weak structure. Good Luck.......SS

Ayuh,.....
If your House is Floating,.... It's a Houseboat with Decks.......
If the house is built on piers,... It's a House with Floors............

And,.......
I Totally Agree with the statements above,.....
Throwing another layer of wood over a Rotten Deck is a Band-Aid.....
Actually,...... Cobb Job is what 1st came to mind.......
