Re: evinrude etec

The guys on this forum are a bit biased, as most of us own Jonny/Rudes. ;)

Are you looking into buying one? They are excellent motors.

Superior? Probably a bit too strong a word.

Etecs are very good and offer some very attractive features.

Re: evinrude etec

they have more low end power than 4strokes, same high end power in my opinion. no oil changes, no schedule maintenance for 3 years.

Re: evinrude etec

If I was buying It would be the Etec. it is a 2 stroke direct fuel injection.
Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at the exact time needed.A very efficient clean burning motor. No maintenance scheduled for
3 years or 300 hours. There is a BRP site that has many many performance
reports on most of the Etec motors.

Re: evinrude etec

If I were getting a new motor it would be a yamaha, etec, or nissan.

Etecs made in North America (some parts come from Canada made in USA)

Yamaha made in Nippon (Japan)

Merc made in China over 40 hp less than made in Japan by at the Tahasu Plant.

Nissan made in Nippon

Suzuki 4 stroke, to slow on take off.

Stats

Etec 90 hp, 320 lbs, 3 cyclinder, direct injected, instant starts, no belts

Yamaha 90 hp, 261 lbs, 3 cylinder, loop charged, tried and true old technology, no belts

Merc 90hp, 375 lbs, 3 cyclinder, direct injected, instant starts, belt driven compressor for injection system.

Nissan 90 hp, 315 lbs, 3 cylinder, direct injected, instant starts, I don't think it has any belts.

It comes down to Money and how hard it is for you to part with it.

Mercs are going to be cheaper, made in china, reliable I don't know, I will not own one because they are part of the brunswick group. I don't like the Brunswick Groups monopoly ideas.

Evinrude is owned by Bombardier and my company does a lot of work with them. but they cost alot.

Yamaha costs is high for for a 30 year old technology.

I have never shopped for a nissan before, can tell ya.

I comes down to 3 things in my opinion
Cost, Warranty, Dealer location.

Good luck
Kyle

Re: evinrude etec

I was not aware merc had the larger engines made in China. The newer Optimax engine is doing very well. I am on OMC guy from childhood, but the reliability of the newer Optimax is winning me over. Am I becoming a dark side sith?

I want to believe the Etec is a better engine, but from what I am reading, all 2 strokes are neck and neck. The Etec is taking the brunt of 4 Stroke basher comments, due to thier thrashing of the 4 Stroke Yamie in the now famous tug of war. It's hard to tell the best technology for the 2 stroke yet. Statistically Etec is ahead on EPA scores. Merc is winning the fuel economy stat, and is not being bashed. Yamaha HPDI had early problems like Evinrude Ficht, and is fighting an uphill battle.

I truly believe the 2 stroke engine is better for use as an outboard!
