I need to get plugs, wires and a cap for my merc 120. I was wondering where most of you buy these items. Locally or mail order?

you can get the plugs and wires at most napa's. The cap needs to be marine rated. and depending of your ignition system the rotor is usually best to get through merc.

i like to get my tune up parts at the mercruiser store....... i will admit that i got plug wires at the napa though as it seems that plug wires are about the only external part ya can use on a boat that isn't marine rated, the rest needs to be marine rated. (which napa does sell, ya just have to specify marine parts) including the plugs.... as for the local or mail order.... i do local, support yer local dealer and all ya know... however my dealer is a mile away and the napa store is next door to the merc store..... if i lived further away, i would consider mail order..... shipping vs. my time and fuel useage to get to the store.....

When it comes to replacing plugs, wire and cap go to your local auto part store. Much cheaper. As long as you have a marine dist which is vented any cap will do. Spark plugs and wires really doesn't know whether they are in a marine eng. or a auto eng. I don't think plugs and wires are that smart. Just my 2 cents.

I converted my old breaker points ignition to a pertronix ignition. When I did that I wanted to move up to 8MM plug wires. My local auto parts stores could not help me. In fact, they had no wires for a mercruiser 140 at all. I had to buy one of those sets of wires you build yourself. I don't like them. Every time I need to remove one I end up pulling the end of the wire off. I wish someone could direct me to a place where I could buy 8MM wires for a Mercruiser 140.

Like was said,Napa sells marine parts Made by Sierra, they even use the exact same part numbers. Auto sparkplugs will rust much faster too.
Ignition and fumes in the bilge,Buy marine rated parts!

I sent my wires for a 1993 5.0 L EFI Cobra to Magnecor, and they made me a set of 8.5 MM wires... I couldn't find a set and didn't want to make any because of not having a crimping tool. They have a couple of choices in size...

I never understood what the (extra mm) has to do with better wires? You can buy decent (magcore) Spiral metallic core suppression wires made by Borg Warner from Pep Boys, just get the Borg Warner "premium" set, or similar design Bosch "premium" wires from Autozone, In fact, NAPA may even have their own version? They are high temp resistant silicon, full spiral metal core, radio noise suppression wires that will light your fire just fine! Along with a premium brass contact, B.W. or NAPA high dialectric plastic distributor cap, should do the trick! You just might have to match your engine to an automtive equivalent, I kinda thought these were originally Chevy Nova, or Pontiac base, 2.5 & 3.0 litre 4cyl engines.
