What oudrive do i need?

I have a 1979 viking deck boat with a merc 898. It was given to me by a buddy of mine. To make a long story short i got it running took it out on the water four times until my outdrive took a crap. All i know is that its a pre alpha. I am wondering if i can upgrade to a newer drive or if im stuck with what i have. Im sure everyone has heard it a hundred times but this is my first boat and i am totally lost. Please help!

most any question that you have has allerady been asked on these fourms...just hit search.....(however your particular question is very specific)

just a side note...the moderators here dont get paid and are very helpful...so give them respect...they have all earned it...

Ayuh,.......Alpha 1 is a Plug,+ Play upgrade on your boat......

You can get an SEI aftermarket off of ebay for like $1200.00......
You need a 1:47 ratio......

Are the gear ratios the same for those outdrives? And would i need a 1:50 for a 305 V8?

Sorry, but I'm gonna be picky here. An alpha I gen I is a plug and play upgrade, an Alpha I gen II won't fit.

An SEI SE106 sterndrive will fit your transom, and as mentioned they sell for $1200 or so.

Thanks for the info. If i go with the SEI SE106 is it something a rookie like me can install or would my best bet be to take it to a shop?....The rookie!!

The complete outdrives from SEI come in two pieces, due to shipping concerns. If you have a decent amount of mechanical ability, you can put the pieces together and install an outdrive by yourself. Never hurts to have a second person there to help lift it, though.

Click on the lettered sections on the last page to view that section....
I reccomend that you save it to your hard drive.....

my guess would be oem service manual #3 and 4... if thems aint the right manuals. someone will correct me... but oem is the way to go....... post up yer serial numbers.... that's the way to identify what ya got... then ya can get the right service manual... see. hm thinks ya need #6..... numbers....

#6 will work for what he needs to do......
If he were rebuilding the old one it would be #3, I believe......
#2 or 3 would work for the engine, preferably #3.....​
