My 96 Johnson Oceanrunner has shown signs of a minor leak down the transom. Everything has been working fine but the trim motor quit last time out. I checked the solenoids - they're good. Tested the trim motor - its good. Haven't had time to deal with it the past 3 weeks - tried it and it worked. Trimmed it all the way down - won't work now. I suspect fluid has leaked out of the hydrolic reservoir and it's low.

So what do I use for fluid and does anyone have any idea where the fluid might be leaking from - I can't see any visible leaks - just a small trail of dried fluid running down the transom under the mount bracket.

Thanks!

Just go to your BRP dealer and get a tube of BRP TNT fluid. Are there no physical signs of leaks visible? Also have you noticed any specific symptoms such as not operating at normal speeds during any of the trim/tilt cycles? Some of the first places to look would be things such as the manual release core and o ring, resevoir fill plug o ring, end cap o ring, and all seals o rings as per the diagram at the bottom etc... There should be a pressure test in you manual for the hydraulic system.

The system is self bleeding, so to fill raise it fully up, fill, cycle it 5 to 6 times, re fill, cycle it,etc... until it is full.

Thanks for the info - the diagram will be very helpful - I appreciate it! Yes, there is signs of a leak. I've noticed a trail of dried fluid running down the transom on one side from under the motor bracket - can't tell where it is coming from - Possibly the manual release as the trail is on that side. I've noticed it that last several months. The trim and tilt has been working fine until the last trip out a few weeks ago. I checked to see if it was working today - and it is. Lowered it all the way down but it wouldn't go back up - tried it again a half hour later and it came back up. I apparently have a slow leak and am low on fluid - now to find the leak.

No visible leaks - it appears the fluid trail I found is from fuel coming out of the carbs when it's trimmed up for hauling. everything looks clean and tight as far as the trim and tilt. I think i'm just low on fluid - after all, I've never put any in it since I bought it new in 95. Is it uncommon to have to add fluid if there is no leaks to be found?

It may have a small leak.It should rarely need fluid.Make sure you use the tilt lock to hold the motor up before you take the fill plug loose.Look for signs of water in the fluid.
