I have just fitted a new selector cam and bearing carrier and bearings to my motor and am having a bit of a problem. When the selector is in neutral the clutch is clashing slightly with the forward gear.

Could this be happening cause the new bearings in the carrier are not set in the right place?

I am also missing the thrust washer behind the prop. could this have any affect?

When I engage the lever between reverse and neutral I then have neutral but the shaft an pin is under pressure and not sitting in the slot on the selector cam.

Please if any one can help.

Beardy,

About the only thing that comes to mind is that the clutch (on the front end of the prop shaft) may be backwards, or the forward gear bearing is not fully seated. Does it have the same problem with the gearcase (leg) off the engine, or only when it is on?

We didn't change the front bearings.

It still clashes when gear case is off the leg.

didn't take the clutch apart and has not come off the shaft so it is still in it's original position.

Maybe some one might know if they had different selector cams for merc. and mariner?

can any one tell me the length of the selector follower pin? I am thinking that it may be worn away by a few mm.

The selector cam was dammaged and chipped when the gears were thrust from forward at good speed to reverse with out slowing.

If you had to install a new cam, you can bet you have the tip worn down on your follower pin. Since the follower pushes the clutch dog away from the rear of F gear, it makes sense to me that is where your problem lies.

Makes no sense for Mariner to change the lower unit from Merc. Mariner probably doesn't have that extensive a design team......why should they, if Merc works ok. If Merc's doesn't and they do design a new one, no reason why Merc wouldn't adopt it....cost effective manufacturing procedures.

Otherwise, you may have to adjust shims in front of the forward gear to move it forward. There is a tool for measuring clearances in the lower unit gearing, but it probably isn't cost effective for you unless you are in the repair business.

Know of no thrust washer on the rear of the propshaft; front end, yes, rear no.....nothing but a 6 fingered SS locking ring and a prop nut with nylon insert back there.

However, at the front of the shaft, where it's tapered is where a thrust washer fits with it's taper matching the shaft's taper when installed. Without that, your prop can walk right up the shaft and into the housing which is just what happened to Dee Jay Cee on his racing engine.....had a pic of it on here not long ago.

Re: 1992 Mariner 90 hp gears help needed

Well I can put an answer to this one just incase it happens to any other person.

I purchased a follower kit that included the cam follower pin and a guide block. The guide block sits behind the follower pin and infront of a spring inside the shaft and is held in place with a stainles cross pin.

Well the new follower reduced the clashing to next to nothing but there was still clashing.

I then thought to change the guide block. After removal and inspection I found no damage to the guide block.

I then inspected the cross pin that held the guide block behind in the shaft and found it was bent out by 1 or 2 mm. I have replaced the pin and every thing is now clash free.

That is a good piece of info as one would/could easily overlook the pin unless they were disassembling the dog assy for some reason.
