Well i set up an appointment to check out a boat that is at a dealer. It was a 19 foot singray. Talked with the guy Monday night and told him i would give him a call in a daiy or two when i could make it out there. They are about 80 miles away.
Called this morning The guy i spoke to was off today so i talked to another sales guy and said i had time today Thur or Sat. He said come on down so i left work earlier and headed out there.
SO we went in to the storage room where the boats were and it was dark couldnt see very well.Showed me he boat. which is fine i suppose Asked about any maintance that had been done by them or the previous owner. Said wasnt sure but we tracked down the guy who did there maintance and he said he just replaced the lower unit today and winterized the boat today.Told me it ran nice started right up yadda yadda yadda.I said great let me hear it? Said he couldnt because it go winterized. Unless i wanted to pay to have to winterized again. Then asked "so do you want it" LMAO you kidding me right? You gonna give me a warranty since i have no idea if it starts or whats wrong with it. How do I know any thing works in the boat.
I told him i wasnt gonna buy any boat that i havent given a test run or at the very least heard it run and checked all the bells whistles etc Told him i dont think they sell too many boats in the winter why let something like winterizing a boat ruin the sale. I really liked the boat and would have bought it had it all everything checked out.Said i would be surprised they do sell alot. Then asked if i wanted to wait till Spring. LOL He stated he would have the other guy call me if things change. LOL
Told him well thanks for wasting my time have a nice day. He said you too shook hands and i left. Rather irritated to say the least.
Back to the drawing board.

guess they didn't want to sell a boat today.....though i can understand where dealers coming from. it does cost someone money and time. my poor dealer did compression tests, drive pressure test prior to me even looking at it. then test drive and retest same with me lookin over his shoulder.......i think ya did good by stickin to yer guns........so much garbage out there. how could he expect you to want any less than yer asking for..... or maybe he didn't want ya to know.......

I am a big fan of 19 foot Stingrays, but I would not have bought that boat.

I can go to the Stingray website and put in a zip code and find other dealers for you to check out -- I am sure some of them have some nice 19 footers.

Sorry about your bad experience! I bet the salesman you were working with came from a Used Car lot!LOL

Keep looking around, you will find a honest, hard working, PROFESSIONAL sales person who will take good care of you. Well...it is possible, isn't it?

Are you sure he didn't at least take a shot at selling you the boat? He didn't say anything like...."There are some cost involved in re-winterizing the boat, if I can get my guys to crank this thing up and run it for you. And If it passes your inspection, would you be ready to make a deal on it today?"

That's how I would have handeled it!

Sales people are, well this happened to me.
I saw an ad for a boat I didn't know but it was in my size and price range.
I am tall and the only question I ask was the size of the mid cabin.
Queen sized I was told.
250 miles to see that boat.
I couldn't even fit in the mid cabin much less sleep there.
I don't understand what he thought he would gain by being untruthful like that.
But that is salesmen all so often.

if you like the boat, call the salesman you originally talked with, tell him what happened, i also think i would talk to the dealership owner. re-winterizing is a cost of doing business.

Thats kinda along the lines of what i expected to happen. Didnt even offer that at all. Really turned me off and right now dont plan on doing business with them at all at this point.
I think i might go talk to the other guy who had the Baja again here is this boat he is pretty firm on this price though seems alittle high but right now is one of very few boats i have even seen i like.

I agree with tashasdaddy. If you really like the boat, then you may want to go as far as to negotiate price and the terms of the sale. You could have everything finalized and contingent on a successful test run and mechanical inspection. Because of the contingency, you have no risk. The dealer might be more open to risking a re-winterizing if it was felt that the test run was the final hurdle to complete the sale.

Yeah, I agree with tashasdaddy and Aquaski. Turn the situation into a plus if you can. I am a scum-sucking sales puke . . . If a potential customer of mine has started off with a bad experience I am much more inclined to meet him halfway . . . Good luck!!

hey kali !
sorry bout the lazy sales person. if I owned business i would have kicked the sales man in the goozoonkas! why store it over the winter? unless its cherry

but ..... why the hurry? ... i cant see where your from... but the boat your looking at was winterized. are you going to buy now and store the boat?

if so... the deals will get better by christmas.

if you are in an area that your going to use the boat this weekend, (sniff, winter re-fit for me) that then please disreguard this post!

if your like the rest of us (seein your joy in dry dock) whats the hurry?...
shop around..., talk to the local marine repair shops. mabe your boat is waiting for you cause someone couldnt afford that new motor?
spend time...., look and your dream ship will come in!

cheers

oops

QC i run a sales office and know how it is.LOL

One other boat i looked @ just had me look at it and then said if i liked it and we came to an agreed upon price i would sign an agreement contingent on a sea trial.Which i find fair.

I am in ST Louis Mo so i wont be using this boat till spring. No hurry right now just looking at what few boats are out there right now. So far only 5 boats within my price range (under 8-9k).Been looking since Aug but not serious till the last few weeks when a few boats came up i was interested in.
Well i am going to look at the 92 baja 204 Islander this afternoon. Will let you guys know how it goes.

its one state over in Indiana, but the guy from this marina is an active and positive contributor on the Stingray forum. Several people have recommended this dealer -- you might check out what they have:

Well the guy wouls budge from 7000 said i would get back to them. Called the bank just to see what they had the value at......5185. Called the dealer and left a message since he didnt answer and explained this. It was a nice boat and liked it very much. But doesnt look like this one will workout. Man its hard work running around looking at boats. LOL

Thanks sickwilly i will check them out.
