Edit:
Ok I did some research and found that it will not, 1991 is the gen. II?
So now my question is what all do I need to know about my outdrive and the outdrive I buy to know that they're interchangable?

2nd edit:
more research and I see that maybe I can do it if I change the gimble too. Would the older be a different gear ratio though? I will get the serial number on the outdrive tomorrow to try to find out more. Where would I find it?

Ayuh,..........

Your Question is just a tad Confusing,......
But,........

If your transom assembley is a 1991 Alpha1 Gen.II,......
You're limited to using a drive from 1991 to Present...........

If you're dealing with 1 from Pre-1991,.......
Any of the Alpha's or Pre-Alpha's will interchange.........But Not the Alpha1, Gen.IIs........

Just get an Alpha I Gen II outdrive, The extra expense and work to replace everything on the back of the boat to go to an older model drive is crazy.
Have no idea what a "Gimbal" is, I do know you would need to replace the gimbal housing, gimbal ring, bellhousing, inner transom plate, exhaust Y and all.

Other than it being a Gen II, all you need to know is gear ratio.

Are you absolutely sure the drive is a GenII drive? Don't assume because your boat is a 91 that your drive is. If you have a 90 power package and drive, it will be the Gen I setup, not a Gen II.

It is an Alpha I Gen II. However, it's obviously been replaced with a used one, as the drive is a 94 for a different transom shield and engine.
But your transom shield is a 91.
This should be in a Searay 170, correct?
The drive is a 1.98:1 gear ratio.

It is indeed a searay 170.
so I need a gen II with 1.98 ratio
If I were go get a slightly different ratio could i account for it with a different pitch prop, or do I need to stay with 1.98?

Re: Will 1985 alpha one bolt on to 1991?

I was just told that the outdrives from 3.0 4cyl. engines all have similar gear ratios and can be interchanged. Is this true? If it came off a 4cyl. and it is a gen II will it fit my 4cyl. that has a genII outdrive now? Sorry for all the questions but I'm a complete beginner and want to make 100% sure I'm doing the right thing.
thanks

You need a 1.98:1 gear ratio. It's just that simple. There isn't anything else for your 3.0L engine.
