I have a 92 Johnson sailmaster 9.9. Several people have told me I can increase the HP by just changing the carb to a 15 hp carb. Is this true??? if so, where can I get a used 15HP carb

the carb, exhaust, porting, and a lot of other stuff. cheaper if you need more power to sell what you have, and buy what you need.

To see if it's do-able, go to the BRP website and look up the year for your motor and compare it with the same year 15 parts numbers. If the block has a different part number forget it...if it has different exaust, carb, and a few other things..forget it cause you will have to buy an old 15hp to rob the parts from, in which case you use parts off your good 9.9 to fix what was wrong with the 15 parts motor.

We priced parts to do that with a 95 model and found it would cost 8-900 dollars. It isn't worth it.

That was true in the 1970's. By 1992 lots of other things had changed. Cheaper to buy a 15 hp than to buy the parts to convert your 9.9 hp.

I had my 1997 9.9 modified to a 15hp at the Evinrude dealer. They replaced the carb and the reed valve assembly. That's it and it cost about $400 and it runs great. I noticed a huge difference and it was well worth the money.

Best to buy what you need in my humble opinion.
