You have to remove the inspection plate to use the three holes. The holes are there. Don't use a puller that pulls up on the edges of a flywheel. That's probably why its warped in the first place. The hex nuts hold the start gear ring to the flywheel.

The inspection plate is removed and there is no corresponding hole on the other side that matches. I do see another hole that is drilled but not the same size as inspection plate holes. Guess I will just tap that hole to use a flywheel puller. Just can't run an engine with a wobbly flywheel.

Here is a 1960 18 hp flywheel. Should be the same as yours.

Thanks for pics, I finally figured it out yesterday and just need to find a 3 point puller or make one. After closer examination, I see that flywheel is just a fraction higher on one side than it is on the opposite side. This leads me to believe that there is a ground wire or something under one side, just enough to make it wobble. Good project for Monday morning.

That shouldn't make it wobble. Could be that its not installed properly on the cam or torqued right. Either way I'd pull it and check things out.

More than likely, somebody in the past has used a puller that grabs the outer rim. That'll bend them and is why we keep yelling don't do that.

Re: Newbee with 1958 ev 18hp fastwin

I got flywheel puller and removed to see that the flywheel had been rugging on the coil wires a little bit. Moved them out of the way and checked points. Everything looks good as new so I reinstalled and the engine started right up. Flywheel wobble is still there. Removed again and still cannot find anything to cause it to not fit properly. I noticed no washer under flywheel nut and saw in my manual that some engines have some type of washer under the flywheel nut. Does this engine require a washer? Flywheel part # is 580231 and plate # is 58021-1D and coil # is 583249 12BN- oa, hope these are proper parts.

Could someone post a link to an inexpensive, good puller? Its easier for me to shop online.

I bought mine at NAPA auto for about 20 bucks, it is called a harmonic balancer puller. they might have an online store. Part no. 775-3901, the bolts that come with it are too large and you will have to determine the size and length to bit. Get grade 5 or 8 if you can.

Use grade 8 bolts and a harmonic balancer puller. That is what You see pictured in my previous photos. There is no washer under your flywheel nut, but make sure you torque the nut to the proper torque or you'll have a new problem.
